چکیده

allergens in maltworkers with extrinsic allergic alveolitis than in the rest of the maltworker population, and (c) atopic maltworkers had a significantly lower rate of skin sensitivity to occupational allergens than non-atopic workers. The first observation is not surprising, since extrinsic allergic alveolitis is not due to a type 1 allergic reaction. The second is of interest, since it suggests that the type 3 allergic reaction responsible for the disease may be accompanied by a type 1 reaction to the same allergen. The third is difficult to explain except, perhaps, on the rather dubious hypothesis that skin sensitivity to common allergens in some way inhabits the development of skin sensitivity to occupational allergens. It would appear, however, that this phenomenon does not protect such patients from the type 3 antigen-antibody reaction believed to be responsible for extrinsic allergic alveolitis. With increasing mechanisation of the malting process the prevalence of this disease is likely to diminish rapidly, and there may never be another opportunity to confirm or refute the hypothesis that in most cases extrinsic allergic alveolitis is a pulmonary allergic reaction to inhaled spores of A clavatus. We thank Dr Robert Whitelaw and Dr J Douglas Bell of the Employment Medical Advisory Service for their help in the field survey; Drs B R Hillis, R N Johnston, A P Littlewood, R S McNeil, W D Murray, and B H R Stack for making many of the clinical assessments; and Miss Jane Williamson for typing the manuscript. We also wish to acknowledge the valuable help we received from the Scottish malting industry and the willing and cheerful co-operation we obtained from the maltworkers. This study was supported by a grant from the Secretary of State's medical research fund.

The effect of silver nanoparticles on Gram-negative bacilli Resistant to Extended-Spectrum Β-Lactamase Enzymes

Abstract: Background and objectives: Antibiotic resistant to Antimicrobial agents is one of the most important concern in hospitals, which can lead to increased costs, treatment fails and mortality rates. The aim of this study was identification of Gram-negative bacilli resistant to extended-spectrum β-lactamase Enzymes (ESBLs) and determination of the effect of silver nanoparticles on the...

GRAM NEGATIVE BACILLI IN BURNS

In a period of nine months, 225 strains of Gram-negative bacilli isolated from burns were identified by a variety of tests in two burn centers in Tehran. The most common species were Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Escherichia coli, Enterobacter agglomerans, Enterobacter cloacae and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Many strains of acinetobacter spp, providencia spp, proteus spp, ser...

Detection of Metallo-Beta-lactamase Production in Rare Carbapenem-Resistant Non-fermentative Gram-Negative Bacilli Isolated in a Tertiary Care Hospital, Visakhapatnam, India

Introduction: Non-fermentative Gram-negative bacilli (NFGNB) are occasionally involved in infectious diseases pathology, but have shown resistance to multiple antibiotics and the capability to gain new resistance factors in the hospital environment. The present study was aimed to investigate the antibiotic susceptibility pattern of rare NFGNB isolated from different clinical samples and the pre...

Emergence of Imipenem Resistance and Presence of Metallo--Lactamases Enzymes in Multi Drug Resistant Gram Negative Bacilli Isolated from Clinical Samples in Kerman, 2007-2008

Background & Aims: Imipenem is a member of Carbapenem with stability against most -lactamases .It is of particular use in the treatment of infections associated with drug resistant gram negative bacteria harboring ESBL and AmpC genes. The aim of this study was to determine the imipenem resistance in gram negative bacteria causing nosocomial infections and the presence of metallo--lactamases (MB...

Drug resistance in relation to use of silver sulphadiazine cream in a burns unit.

Topical chemoprophylaxis of extensive burns with silver sulphadiazine cream led to a large increase in the proportion of sulphadiazine-resistant Gram-negative bacilli in a burns unit. When all sulphonamide treatment in the ward was stopped; the incidence of sulphonamide-resistant strains fell back to levels similar to those recorded when silver sulphadiazine treatment was introduced. This was a...
